Old Master Drawings.
Most of the art historical work I have done over the past 30 years or so has concerned Italian and German art of the 15th and 16th centuries, including some projects on iconography and the classical tradition, and architectural history — as well as more recent art, including art brut and objets trouvés. Some of that will appear here as well.
Old Master Drawings is a thorough reworking of The Drawing Site, which arose in the late 1990's from a confluence of my work as an art dealer and as a teacher. I hope you will find the new site a useful place to begin and to continue in learning about drawings, an artform which has fascinated artists and amateurs for centuries. In addition to my general discussions of drawings as artists' tools and as collectable artworks, you will find my online reference site on drawing materials and techniques. Both this and The Drawing Site received About.com's "Best of the Web" Award for 1999. In the next few months Drawing Materials and Techniques will undergo the same radical overhaul as The Drawing Site.
I have also added a page with listings of current events in the world of drawings: exhibitions, conferences, lectures, and important publications in the field, which will be continually expanded and improved. If you are working on any projects of this sort, please notify me, so that I can list it.
There are also drawings for sale on the site. Click "Contact" at the right edge of every page, if you are interested in one or more of them and would like to know the price. Your purchases enable me to carry on my work on this site, as well as The Berkshire Review and New York Arts.
